When we surface after a beautiful dive. 100 foot vis, blue water and lots of marine life. Our eyes sparkle with awe and amazement. However, what many of us may not know is that over the past 40 years much of Florida’s reef has been destroyed or degraded due to human impact.
New divers have little to no frame of reference of which to compare their current dive experience. They can only see the underwater landscape in the moment, not the degradation. Thus, much of this human impact to our reefs goes unnoticed by the majority of the population. Without the public’s concern and support, the damage is largely unchecked by those who are causing it.
Project Baseline empowers divers to document their favorite dive sites as they exist today and continue documenting them over time. Establishing a baseline through documentation of our environment, is a powerful tool for observing change and taking positive action. It’s also fun!
