What Equipment?

Basic GUE Equipment Configuration

Sorting out all the required equipment for classes can be a daunting task. Here is a quick reference to demystify the process.

It’s always best to contact your instructor before making purchases.  Buying the right equipment first saves bundles of cash in the long run, because you will not have to replace equipment that does not serve your needs.

  • A single cylinder with a K-, H-, or Y-valve is fine
  • You can also use a double cylinders connected with a manifold
  • *Consult your instructor to verify size requirements.


Single tank

  • One second-stage regulator 
  • 5 to 7 foot hose 
  • Pressure gauge
  • Inflation for the buoyancy compensator
  • A means to inflate a drysuit where applicable

Two required first stage regulators

The First Regulator

  • Must supply a pressure gauge
  • Must Provide inflation for a drysuit (where applicable)

The Second Regulator

  • Must supply a 5 to 7 foot  hose
  • Must have an inflation source for the BC


Single tank hose kit: 7′ (213 cm) primary, 22″ secondary, 24″  SPG

Doubles hose kit: 7′  primary,  22″ (56 cm) secondary, 24″ (61 cm) SPG

Backplate system:

  • Rigid Plate
  • Held to the diver by one continuous piece of webbing
  • Adjustable
  • A buckle to secure the system at the waist
  • Crotch strap is attached and looped through the waistband
  • The continuous webbing should support five d-rings
    • Left hip
    • In line with a diver’s right collarbone
    • In line with the diver’s left collarbone
    • On the front and back of the crotch strap

Buoyancy compensation device (BC):

  • Back-mounted and minimalist in nature
  • Free of extraneous strings, tabs, or other material
  • No restrictive bands or restrictive elastic affixed to the buoyancy cell
  • Wing size and shape is appropriate to the cylinder size
  • Single bladder/non bungeed wing


  • At least one time/depth measuring device
  •  Wrist-mounted compass
  • Mask is low-volume
  • fins are rigid, non-split
  •  At least one cutting device
  •  Wet Notes
  •  At least one surface marker buoy (SMB) with spool per diver
  • Exposure suit appropriate for the duration of exposure

 Tech Pass*

  • GUE double tank configuration
  • Primary and back-up lights  (to meet standards)
  • Back-up mask

Some additional useful equipment

  • Extra  stainless steel marine grade bolt snaps
  • 1 or 2 Stainless steel marine grade double ender bolt snaps
  • Hood
  • Gloves
  • Cylinders filled with 32%
  • Appropriate weighting system
